Rough Masters Review

Love the rasp in her voice, often flat or not quite in key, and the packing of too many syllables into a line. And I would not have thought there was a useful alloy of grim and sugary, but Campbell hammers it out track after track throughout _Rough Masters_. The first track, "Life", largely comprises a series of optimistic platitudes strung artlessly together to a happy tune. So it could be just what it seems or subversive: a nihilistic rant. Right? I don't think so. Unsettling or hopeful, Campbell anneals these two aspects. Puts the two back in some sort of rational perspective, neither giddy nor depressing. I'm going to go with hopeful.
But, like me, you probably heard "Undead" first as an extra on the Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog DVD. So if, like me, that song appealed to you, then give the others from _Rough Masters_ a shot. I'm completely hooked now.
Rough Masters Overview
Brynna Campbell's "Rough Masters" is an acoustic-alternative album. It takes the listener on a journey of bliss and heartbreak seen through the eyes of a young singer/songwriter.
Raised by wild musicians in Los Angeles, Brynna Campbell draws inspiration from older bands including "America" and "The Beatles," as well as newer artists like Alanis Morissette and Ben Kweller. Her songs have a wide range, from the tongue-in-cheek lyrics of "Life" and "What You Get" to the earnest entreaties of "Rain" and "Sending."
Special Thanks to:
Richard Campbell for all the late hours and work put into making this CD, Glynnis Campbell for putting up with all the noise and resisting the urge to sing along, Dylan Campbell for use of the drum set and for giving me a comprehensive list of any and all parodies of these songs possible, Candice Shikai and Natasha Thomas for the lovely makeup work and photography, Madeleine St. Marie for finding a bassist and for the constant support, Daniel Konialian and Matthew Shayefar for being excellent roadies, Mr. John McCollaum for providing the first venue for showcasing these works, and to Mr. Jonathan Kenion and Mr. Jay Gehringer for a wonderful four years of music.
Also, thanks to all the people who buy this CD legitimately. Without you, I would not be able to fund the further production of such music.
