Song Poem Hits of 2007 Review

These are the best song poems I've heard since their heyday in the '70s.

My favorites are the Beatlesque "Rich and Famous", the haunting "Ballad of the Boy in the Bubble", the corny country of "Painting the Town", and the achingly beautiful "Two Ships Passing in the Night".

Many other songs on here I enjoy as well, too numerous to mention.

Despite my high rating, there are some songs I don't like, for example "Julien Nitzberg Superstar" (which my friend likes, so there you go).

Song Poem Hits of 2007 Overview

You have never heard anything like this, unless you are a collector of Song-Poems! Each of the first 21 songs began as a poem received by email, then set to music by the one-man-band of David Dubowski. It's all done from his home, with lots of real drums, guitar, bass, percussion, and an eight track multitrack digital recorder with only a smattering of drum machine. The sound is, well, hard to classify. Some are rockers, some are pop, one was made to sound like Hendrix and three were made to sound like the Fab Four. Tracks 1-21 started as poems from various songwriters. Then David Dubowski set them to music and the result is the classic song-poem sound. They differ from historic song-poems in that much care and time was taken to make them as good as possible, even though they were all recorded at home. Amyy Keith gives some nice female vocals on several of these little gems. And there are three non-songpoem bonus tracks at the end, one from the ancient pre-digital days of 1985. No matter what, song-poems are the most unusual genre of music history. Packed with 73 minutes of fun!

He has also composed a symphony, "Symphony on Native American Themes" orchestrated in 1996-99 and digitally recorded by the composer. A digital performance of this on CD will be released here in the near future.

What ever happened to GOOD contemporary jazz? I remember when contemporary jazz meant music that was energetic and exciting. Music that was adventurous and spontaneous -- and made you even want to get up and dance! What is with all the elevator music we hear on these muzak radio stations that call themselves "jazz stations," going by the names the Quiet Storm, or the Breeze, or the Wave? I recently bought Isaiah Stewart "Life Games," and it took me back to a time when contemporary jazz was exciting music that explored new directions and wasn't music you would hear in a dentist's office. But it was still VERY listenable and enjoyable! The music on Life Games is great from cover to cover, and there is an amazing amount of variety -- everything from hard rock to swing to funky R&B. And the music is also MELODIC, which is pretty amazing considering that Stewart is a drummer, and that he composed and arranged all of the music. I especially liked the song "Midtown Funk," as well as the smooth groove and pretty melody of "Solar Island." (OK, I liked all 14 songs.) I can tell Stewart grew up listening to all the jazz I used to love listening to in the '70s and '80s. Artists like Tom Scott, Jean-Luc Ponty, Al Dimeola, and Chuck Mangione, etc. This CD took me back to a time when contemporary jazz was actually good musc -- cheerful, fun and exciting music -- and not what you heard in an elevator. Highly recommended!

Acoustic, unplugged and even a cappella at times, this is raw, emotional melody and complete artistic honesty at its core.


Kimberly's well-known lyrical simplicity is mirrored by the minimalist natural camera angles and no-frills capture of a visionary rogue director. The viewer joins the two, sneaking into secret chambers at 4am, kneeling with Kimberly as she sings her stories in places unallowed.
